Its primary goal is to identify, protect, preserve, and promote cultural and natural heritage around the world considered to be of outstanding value to humanity. This heritage includes monuments, groups of buildings, and sites with historical, aesthetic, archaeological, scientific, ethnological, or anthropological value, as well as natural features, geological and physiographical formations, and habitats of threatened species of animals and plants of outstanding universal value from the point of view of science, conservation, or natural beauty.
